About Us

The European Society of Pathology (ESP)

Established in 1963, has its headquarters in Brussels and represents the leading European force in Pathology with more than 5,000 active members, 25 Working Groups (WG) and affiliated Societies and 30 national pathology societies.

ESP provides on-site and on-line educational, training and scientific programmes as well as funding opportunities to ESP members.

The ESP organises an annual congress, holds several virtual and on-site postgraduate courses each year through the European School of Pathology, ESP Academy, Giordano Fellowship and others and has an official journal: “Virchows Archiv”.

Vision

Our vision is to lead the way in pathology, setting the standard for excellence and advancing progress to significantly improve patient care and outcomes around the globe.

Mission

As the leading force in pathology, the European Society of Pathology (ESP) promotes high quality pathology diagnosis for all patients, up-to-date education across the globe and support cutting-edge research to understand disease and translate science into medical practice.

Diagnosis

High quality pathology for all patients.

Education

Up-to-date education across the globe.

Research

Supporting cutting-edge research to understand disease and translate sciences into clinical practice.

An evolving mission

The field is rapidly transforming through precision pathology, which combines traditional tissue analysis with molecular assays, biomarker testing, digital imaging, and advanced computational methods such as AI. These integrated approaches deliver a more detailed understanding of disease and support personalised, evidence based decisions in clinical practice.
ESP’s mission now includes supporting this transition by promoting scientific standards, enhancing collaboration, and improving compatibility between systems to ensure consistent and comparable diagnostic data across laboratories and countries.
A legacy of leadership: Since 1963, ESP has advanced pathology through scientific excellence, education, and collaboration – growing from a European society to an organisation with activities across the globe.
Educational impact: EScoP courses, the ESP Academy, Masterclasses and online programmes provide high-quality training for pathologists at all career stages.
International contribution: ESP participates in guidelines, collaborative studies and educational initiatives that help strengthen pathology at international level.

The ESP interacts with national pathology societies in Europe and has a significant number of established collaborations with other European organisations, clinical and scientific associations, and international pathology societies.

All ESP educational and training programmes (e.g., Courses, ESP Academy, Giordano Fellowship) and scientific activities will inevitably advance pathology in Europe and greatly facilitate communication between European pathologists.

The ESP Foundation, established in 2016, provides educational and training programmes in different pathology areas as well as external quality assessment (EQA) programmes for several biomarkers. Diagnostic laboratories worldwide participate in the ESP Foundation QA schemes, such as Lung, Colon and PDL1.
